Since then, the practice has been evolving for thousands of years.

Ayurveda believes in the use of complex compounds, minerals and metal substances. An Ayurvedic massage is inspired by nature and different forms of organic oils and compounds are used.

What to expect:

"Abhyanga" is the traditional name for Ayurvedic Massage. It means "love or care." The massage aims to provide physical benefits like releasing muscle tension, drain the lymphatic wastes, nourish skin from head to toe. The main goal of an Ayurvedic therapist is relaxation- attaining a state of peace(Shanti).

Ayurvedic massage stands out from the other forms of massage in the fact that it focuses more on the skin, rather than strokes penetrating deep into the tissue muscles. There is not a ton of massage involved, but the main focus is on the manipulation of energy fields to release the physical and emotional burden. This is widely known as "sneha" in Sanskrit texts.

Ayurvedic massage generally has a specific sequence, which is followed. However, the therapist may obtain information about the body and tailor the massage specifically to each client. The therapist obtains information about the vata(space or air: nervous system), pitta(fire: the digestive system with the enzymes) and alpha(earth and water: equated with mucus and respiratory system). These 3 form the elemental bodily humors called the doshas or Tridosha. It is the job of the therapist to find the Dosha imbalance.

When you reach for the massage, the therapist might ask some questions, or even ask to fill out a form to observe the dosha characteristics and tailor the massage to the needs of the mind and the body.

The massage begins with gentle, rhythmic strokes with help you attain a state of deep focus and relaxation. The strokes do not disturb the muscle layers. Organic oils like clove, cinnamon, sesame, coconut or sunflower oil are often used and they are all without harmful chemicals and preservatives.

At times, the oils may be heated so that they penetrate through the muscular tissues. This allows them to transport their healing properties directly in your cells. This helps in improving the immune system.
